Breaks Interstate Park

Special Halloween campground activities will be planned at Breaks Park during the weekend of October 24-25, with campsite decorating, seed spitting, pumpkin carving, a costume contest, scream contest, daytime Autumn hayrides, and for the first time — a haunted trail hayride.

“A lot of the programming at the Breaks is educational in nature, but sometimes we like to offer our visitors a chance to just have some fun. Everyone always seems to have a great time with the Halloween activities,” said Superintendent Austin Bradley.

Festivities will begin Friday evening at the park amphitheater with a costume contest at 6 pm, followed by a night hike at 8:30.

On Saturday, a pumpkin carving contest will be held at the Visitor Center. Participants may bring their own pumpkin or purchase one at the event. Three hours will be allotted to complete the carving. Hayrides will be held from 1 pm to 5 pm starting in the campground at the interpretive stage near the basketball court. At 3:00 pm, a seed spitting contest will be held at the Visitor Center, followed by a screaming contest at 4 pm.

A campsite decorating contest will also be held during the weekend. Judging will begin at 5:30 pm on Saturday, with prizes awarded to the winners.

Beginning at 6 pm Saturday evening, a haunted trail hayride is planned through a cooperative effort with Team Junebugs, of the Relay for Life in Dickenson County. From 6 pm to 7 pm before it is fully dark, a less scary experience will be offered. From 7 pm to 10 pm, the haunted trail hayride will be in full-scare mode. Hayrides will be scheduled every 20 minutes. Cost will be $5 per person, and all proceeds will go to Relay for Life. To ensure a seat on the hayride, please call the park in advance to reserve a seat on the wagon. Parking for the haunted hayride will be at the Splash! in the Park.

Trick or Treating will also be held in the campground on Saturday beginning at 7 pm. Campers who wish to participate in handing out treats will receive a free bundle of firewood for their participation, and will be given a special site marker so trick or treaters will be able to identify participating sites.

To reserve a seat on the hayride, or more information about this or other park events, contact the park Visitor Center at 276-865-4413 ext. 3221.
