The City of Pikeville is working through the Kentucky Department of Tourism towards receiving certification as a Kentucky Trail Town. Pikeville City Tourism and the Pikeville Main Street Program, Inc. recognize the tremendous opportunity and movement toward outdoor recreation activities to help boost the economy, encourage physical fitness and to promote our natural resources. As described by the Kentucky Department of Tourism every region in Kentucky has significant natural resources that are intertwined with quaint picturesque communities rich with opportunity for tourism development.
One of Eastern Kentucky’s and Pikeville’s natural resources is the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. The Levisa Fork is known as a Blue Water Trail destination providing activities along the river for water enthusiasts, residents and tourists. The river will be featured as the place of destination in Pikeville’s upcoming Trail Town certification process. The whole community of can benefit from these vast resources by providing outdoor adventure seeks connections to land and water trails as well as the welcoming hospitality found in the traditional downtown shops and restaurants known as the Main Street district.
In addition to their enjoyment of outdoor adventure, trail users also want to shop, take in theatrical and musical performers, purchase Kentucky crafted souvenirs, stay overnight and visit other attractions. By connecting these resources, your town can become a certified “Trail Town” community. Pikeville Tourism and Main Street’s desire is to make an adventure complete by highlighting our trails and downtown opportunities. Any trail, long or short, is a valuable asset to a community. A trail can provide recreation for people of all ages and fitness levels and offers the chance to study nature or local history.
Pikeville’s application process will continue thru early September and will be submitted to Kentucky Tourism for review with the hope of becoming Kentucky Trail Town soon to follow.
How You Can Help
On Saturday, April 1st, Pikeville Tourism will begin with a River Cleanup Day as the first event in coordination of the certification process. Anyone interested in participating in the cleanup event please meet at Texas Roadhouse as 10:00.
