Recovery Walk

WestCare and UNITE Pike present second annual “Walk for Recovery”

Hundreds of walkers are expected to kick off morning activities at the 2nd Annual Walk for Recovery presented by WestCare and UNITE Pike on Saturday, September 29, 2012 beginning at 11:00 a.m. to help raise awareness of substance abuse and mental health disorders prevention and treatment. The Walk will begin and end at the Main Street Plaza of the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville. The Walk is free. Participants will receive an event t-shirt and enjoy a pulled-pork barbecue lunch and other refreshments. There will also be live music featuring Morgan George and inflatables for the kids.

A balloon release will follow the walk where participants can tag a balloon with the name of a loved one who has died due to substance abuse, who is currently struggling with addiction or the name of someone who has helped them in their recovery.

The theme of this year’s walk: “Recovery: It Works” is a reminder to those who struggle with addiction that while the road to wellness is not easy, it is worth the effort. The theme also reminds the community that, although immediate results are hard to see during someone’s recovery, working toward recovery is a goal that family, friends and community members should support.

The Walk for Recovery, presented by WestCare and UNITE Pike emphasizes that substance use and mental health disorders can affect anyone. It is essential for the people of Pike County and the surrounding area to remain dedicated to the recovery process by advocating for resources which confront these treatable disorders, while supporting individuals in long-term recovery and their families.
