Historic Passenger Train Excursion April 12-13

This is your chance to become a part of history! For the first time since 1958, a passenger train excursion from Grundy, VA to Devon, WV will pass through Pike County, Kentucky. This first-of-its-kind passenger rail excursion is schedule for April 12-13, 2014. The excursion is part of Norfolk Southern’s “21st Century Steam Program” and will be operated by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. The train will depart from and return to downtown Grundy, Virginia. The excursion will travel into Pike County, Kentucky before arriving at Devon, West Virginia prior to its return to Grundy. A former Southern Railway 630 steam locomotive will power this special excursion train with diesel assistance.

Step 2: Buy Your Tickets

Tickets are affordably priced at $35 for coach seating and $45 for deluxe seating, and will be available through TvRail.com OR by calling 423-894-8028. Climate-controlled coaches will provide comfortable seating and large windows for viewing the picturesque mountain scenery. This trip will operate over the Norfolk Southern Pocahontas Division’s Buchanan Branch line (former Norfolk & Western Railway) on a 72-mile round trip. Departure location will be the Grundy Town Center shopping complex parking deck at 1179 Riverview Drive. Departure times are 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., returning around 1:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively. Passengers will stay on the train for the entire trip, including while the train is turned around in Devon. The route begins in Virginia and takes riders through a portion of Kentucky before touching the edge of West Virginia, following the Levisa Fork River and passing through several tunnels. It ends uniquely by exiting from a tunnel onto a double-bridged wye track over the Tug Fork River. A commissary car will sell snacks, soft drinks and light food items in addition to souvenirs.
