Go on a Russell Fork Whitewater Adventure
Each year, thrill seekers from all around gather to Elkhorn City for an adrenaline rush with Russell Fork whitewater. During the weekends of October you can expect spectacular fall colors and various levels of whitewater rapids, ranging from class II to IV in the upper and lower sections of the Russell Fork, to the mighty Class III to V whitewater areas, lovingly known as El Horrendo, Walk the Plank, Triple Drop, Fist and so on.
The Perfect Run
With 16 miles of free-flowing whitewater between Haysi, VA and Elkhorn City, KY, the Russell Fork River is an excellent place to go on an outdoor adventure. Your trip begins with a good warm-up with two miles of Class II rapids, progressing up to an exhilarating Class IV and higher. After experiencing unrelenting whitewater action, take a much needed break at the gorgeous Garden hole before continuing your journey.
Once you’re out on the whitewater again, take a detour to the Class VI rapids, before re-entering the river for more thrills. When your adventure is through, you will find yourself back where you started, in Elkhorn City, a great place to have dinner, and catch a show at the Artists Collaborative Theatre to complete a day of unforgettable adventure and entertainment.
Note, there are no companies offering trips through the main canyon, which is very challenging, and reserved for experts.
If you would like to experience a truly exciting outdoor adventure, plan your visit with us in October and bring your whitewater gear. The Russell Fork River can be difficult to locate for those of you who do not make the trip each year, but luckily we are here to help.
